Photo Style Thought to Ponder

    by Aaron Hockley

    Consider my theory:

    • Landscape or wide-angle railroad photos will be most pleasing when well-planned and waited for.
    • Detail or human-element railroad photos will be most pleasing when snapped on the spur of the moment.

I would add a “yes, but….” to the the first statement. Given the variability of weather, light, trains and where you happen to be, flexibility, hand holding a shot, a quick eye for scenery and a willingness to plunge out through the brush can yeild some pretty good shots. I have seen some very good photogrphers miss some good opportunities because they were not “set up”. In this digital era, the only real risk is a broken leg.
