Great Photographers on the Internet

by Aaron Hockley on June 26, 2006

With the popularity of internet photo critique forums, one has to wonder, how would some great photographers of the past fare on today’s message boards?  A humorous piece of satire by The Online Photographer.

The T.O.P. entry you mention reminded me of the April (Fools) issue of PopPhoto magazine where they used the photoshop fix column to suggest improvements to classic photos like the migrant mother. Scores of readers didn’t ‘get it’ and had their panties all twisted up over the satire of critiques that miss the entire point of great photos. The letters column for May (or was it June?) exposed the deception and hopefully gave some people a wake-up call.
Unless a photographer is completely in the weeds, a good critique points out what they did right and how the photo makes you feel. The nitpickers are usually looking for status they don’t deserve.
