What influences your photographs? What is your inspiration?

After the Autumn Leaf Slideshow those were questions that lingered in my mind after seeing some fabulous photographs and presentations.  As it ends up I spent parts of the day after the slideshow with Ryan Dadgari and Scott Lothes discussing these very issues.  Did I get all the answers and secrets?  Not exactly.  What I did get from discussing  railroad photography was influence and inspiration.  Here’s a few words from the discussion that are helping drive some of my photographs.

context
environment
people
story
motion
size
purpose

That Sunday was a time for growth.  Thanks guys!

  • I get my inspiration from your pictures! They are phenomenal!!!
  • Dan
I was going to mention history, then I see you have mentioned it. Taking pictures now is fun when you have an old photo and you are trying to see the changes over the years between them.
  • How about this addition to your list of motivations: "Curiosity." I've noticed that strange little gallows-like structure in the backwater of the river hundreds of times as I've driven by, and wondered "what is it?" "What was it used for?" First time I've seen it in a photograph.
  • Certainly curiosity is something that could influence and inspire. Good addition!

As to the gallows structure, it is head works of an old ferry slip. When I first moved here in the early 90s the slip looked workable however now most of it has fallen into the water and serves more as a bird sanctuary than anything.

For those not familiar with the Columbia River gorge, the photograph is taken at the west end of Stevenson, WA where the BNSF crosses Rock Creek.
