Blue, Misty, and Dark

by Steve Eshom on February 6, 2010

This week I had a chance to review and edit a few more images from my visit to Stevens Pass last weekend.   During the review I found a few I particularly liked because they highlighted the dark, moist, and cloudy weather we experienced all weekend.   Who says the days have to be sunny to make interesting photographs?

 Blue Amtrak

Blue Amtrak.  Amtrak’s Empire Builder pulls up to the east portal of the Cascade
tunnel to await the dispatcher to get an override for the flush system.

Mist Slot

Misty Slot.  A westbound Z train plods uphill between Merritt and Berne.

Baring

Baring.  Thanks to Amtrak an eastbound Z train uses the siding at Baring
to meet a westbound stack train attempting to stay ahead of Amtrak.

I’ve been following your blog for a little while now and am loving the Stevens Pass photos. I’ve done quite a bit of research on the Stevens Pass Highway (old roads and abandoned segments are my focus), but it’s hard to not get sucked into the railroad history, which predates the old highway.

I also dabble in photography – great shots, especially the last one. I’ve been hoping to grab some of my own around Seattle. I’m sort of new to the city and have been noticing all the great locations – Carkeek and Richmond Beach being my two favorites thus far.

    Thanks!

I love old highways too though I don’t spend too much time with them. The old Stevens Pass highway is certainly interesting. In the 80′s it was used as a detour route when the west side of the pass was being rebuilt with new passing lanes and the 4 lanes above the hairpin turn. The one trip we made up it during the detour was quite interesting. Essentially the DOT had patched a few holes, fix a few washouts and painted a yellow stripe on. It certainly was nice to see the pass from another perspective.

    Thanks for reading the blog!

Very good work on this. I agree; lack of sunshine is no barrier to good photography. Some of my best have been in rainy weather.
